Devils appear at all kinds of festivals in Mexico, including Day of the Dead. Rather than evil creatures, they are more often the jester that gets away with playing tricks on people.  These figures are painted with aniline paints, which soak into the wood and give it a vibrant color that will become less bright over time.  This is how Oaxacan woodcarvings were originally painted before long-lasting acrylics took their place
