Fabulous Mermaids

Updated June 22, 2006

Why mermaids in Mexico?  One story is that the native Mexicans were captivated by the mermaids that were carved on the bows of the ships of the Spanish conquistidores. They borrowed the image and used it as a symbol of rain and the desire for fertile land for their crops.
