Black Pottery by the Descendents of Dona Rosa

Updated April 2, 2008

Black Pottery of Oaxaca is not black to begin with. At a critical point in firing, fuel is added to the fire, and the potter rapidly seals all openings to the kiln, producing thick smoke that impregnates the pieces with carbon. Before firing, the surfaces of the pots are burnished with a quartz stone to give them a metal sheen.

In her last years, Dona Rosa of San Bartolo Coyotepec, Oaxaca became a living legend. This small and fragile woman could hand-throw large and graceful jars on a primitive wheel. Visitors and collectors from all over the world came to her village to see her black clay pottery.

Today, many years after her death, Dona Rosa's son continues creating the beautiful and unique black pots that his mother made famous

We always have a nice variety of larger black pottery pieces, but they have only been fired once making them a nightmare to ship. There is a professional art shipper we use that we have a great deal of confidence in, but the cost of such shipping could double or even triple the price of some of the larger pieces.  If this doesn't bother you, please feel free to e-mail us with your wish list and we can send you pictures of what we have that will fit it.
