Capula is a village in the state of Michoacan, easily accessible from Patzcuaro and Morelia. It is best known for two kinds of pottery.
-The dinnerware and decorative pottery made there is characterized by it's earthy glazes and designs of fish, butterflies, and other wildlife. Usually you can see small dots, pointillism, making up much of the design.
-Very delicate skeletal figures, usually men and women of yesteryear, make up the second kind. These magnificent and often humorous figures come in every size, quality, and price range imaginable. The master artist of his village is Juan Torres who, we are told is the teacher/ mentor of many of the local artists and is copied by many more. However, many of his students are also becoming quite famous. Travel publicity put out by Michoacan often tout Juan Torres as a "treasure."
