The village of Santa Maria Atzompa in the state of Oaxaca has been known for many years as a great pottery-producing center. The pioneering Teodora Blanco, whose work was collected
by Nelson Rockefeller,
lived here. Her daughter, Irma, continues her work. Dolores Porras, who some have called the "Picasso of Mexico," was an assistant to Teodora and has been doing her extraordinary work in clay for over 50 years. Angelica Vasquez is another artist of renown whose delicate figures are in great demand. In addition to these well-known names, many not-so-famous artisans of Atzompa turn out works of distinction that are guaranteed to delight.
