Oaxacan Woodcarving

Updated February 20, 2008

Carved from the Copal Tree when the wood is green, this art comes from the three villages--Arrazola, San Martin Tilcajete and La Union Tejalapan in the State of Oaxaca. Full of movement and humor, the figures spring from the imaginations and superstitions of the carvers, for whom myth and magic are as much a part of daily life as conventional religion.
