Ocumicho Pottery

Updated February 3, 2006

This pottery is from the tiny village of Ocumicho in Michoacan.  Although a few very famous artists of this village do sign their pieces, most pieces are unsigned.  They are fashioned crudely of clay and single fired only. Then they are painted in bright colors with a matte finish.  They are not glazed or re-fired, so they can be quite fragile.

Traditional subject matter includes religion, everyday life, celebrations, and Day of the Dead.  Often you will find devils in Ocumicho pottery, usually where you would not expect them. This pottery is colorful, fun, often silly, and, because of its crude quality is "true" folk art.
